What is Cultivated ?

Coffee

Arabica and Robusta are the two main varieties of coffee cultivated in the coffee-growing districts of Karnataka State, covering over 5 lakh acres by 1.7 lakh growers. On the estate, 15 to 20-year-old Robusta coffee has been cultivated on about 18 acres, while 10 to 15-year-old Arabica and Robusta are inter-cropped on 10 acres. Coffee can be grown as rainfed crop, but company is installing sprinkler irrigation system which can enhance production. Coffee is yielding in all the plots, however few young plants will take another 2 years to reach standard production. Company is following traditional Coffee cultivation practise in the estate. Coffee blossoms in summer and harvesting is carried out in the winter, fruits have to be picked, dried and dispatched. Coffee is the second-most valuable exported commodity in the world, second only to crude petroleum oil and always will have demand in the global market.

Agarwood

Agarwood is a rich and resinous heartwood produced from Agar trees, also known as ‘Wood of Gods’. At Vismaya, 150 Agarwood trees are planted in half acre plots. Trees will be inoculated when girth reaches to 20 to 25 inches and harvested in 8 to 10 years. After harvest, new sucker will grow and ready for second and third harvest early in 6- 7 year.

Agarwood oil and Chips are famous in the international market as Oud oil and Chips. Over 500 reputed perfumery brands the world over are extensively using agar oil for fragrances. In the Middle East, Oud (Agarwood) is considered as a luxury but necessary fragrance and is used as a mark of respect. Lower grades are used in the manufacturing of incense sticks. It is widely used in the medicinal practices in China, Japan and other countries in the region. Annually, around 80 countries import agarwood worth of several billions US$. It’s historical product and will have consistent demand over the years.

Pepper

Pepper is native to the Western Ghats of South India, extensively cultivated in varioustropical countries. Black pepper is commonly cultivated in Karnataka and Kerala, mostly as an inter-crop on the shade trees in Coffee and Cardamom estate. About 100 Pepper vines are maintained per acre at Visamya. About 40 to 50 vines are planted on Silver Oak. And 15 to 25 Pepper vines will be planted on existing timber trees. If in case supporting trees are less than 100, then Dadap is planted as temporary supporting tree. Pepper generally starts yielding from its 4th year onwards. Yield will stabilise mostly in the 7-8 years. Harvesting will be carried out when berries mature and turn into yellowish red colour. Berries generally mature in the month of February.

Timber Trees

Currently about 50 to 60 timber trees are in an acre, out of which around half the trees are Silver Oak and remaining are jungle trees. 15 to 20 valuable timber trees of Nandhi, Mathi, Jack fruit etc are grown up in the estate.

Mahogany trees will be alternatively planted along with the boundary or where ever space is available. All these trees will make good support for growing Pepper and add value for asset too. Mahogany is one of best commercially growing timber tree ready for harvesting in 20 years of planting.
